Celia’s Furry Angel

This past Friday afternoon, my 17-year-old pit bull, Bruno, peacefully passed away with the compassionate assistance of Lap of Love 💕End of Life Care via Dr. Sam.

Over the years, Bruno demonstrated his heroism by saving one of my roommates who has sickle cell anemia; when he fainted, Bruno licked his face until he was able to call 911. The doctor said this saved his life!

On a lighter note, in his younger days, Bruno had a knack for scavenging. He would place his front paws on the kitchen counter in search of food. I’ll never forget the time he took a bite out of a chocolate birthday cake meant for my former roommate, Trey, who was also his original dad. 😂

One of the most meaningful periods of his life was the two years he spent closely following our mother, Celia, around her home in Pittsford, N.Y.  as she battled vascular dementia. Initially, she insisted, “That pit bull’s not coming into my house!” Yet by the time she passed, they had become inseparable friends. 😂

In the last 48 hours of his life, I looked into his eyes and saw a glimmer of hopelessness for the first time in 17 years. I believe he sensed that his time was drawing near. Bruno’s last supper consisted of: steak and eggs, rigatoni, and homemade red sauce, as well as chocolate ice cream with nuts for the first time!

From a Christian perspective, since animals are mentioned throughout the Bible, perhaps I’ll see Bruno again someday!

I want to express my gratitude to all the family and friends who supported Bruno over the years. God's grace truly kept him alive for a purpose. John 3:16
